Decolonisation and Museums: Creating the ‘Endeavour’ Galleries

April 9 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

Decolonisation and Museums: Creating the ‘Endeavour’ Galleries

Wednesday 9th April, 12:30pm, Classroom 1

Dr Claire Warrior, Senior Curator, Royal Museums Greenwich

The National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, founded in 1936, attracts over a million visitors a year and has the most important holdings in the world on the history of Britain and the sea. In 2018, four new galleries opened at the Museum as part of a major refurbishment, the ‘Endeavour’ project.

The galleries marked a sea-change for the Museum, emphasising increased access, relevance and representation, augmenting the available permanent gallery space by 40%, and telling maritime histories anew. Their development was underpinned by an extensive programme of community engagement, consultation and collaboration, which is visible in the galleries themselves.

In this talk, Dr Claire Warrior will discuss some of the challenges and considerations involved in creating the new galleries. How can a museum so deeply embedded in histories of colonialism and imperialism represent their complexities? What are the opportunities and limitations of collections? And what kind of legacy does a project like this create?

This guest talk is presented by The Centre for International Visual Arts and Cultures (IVAC)
