Faculty’s Role in Student Well-being
April 11 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm
The Well-being Research Centre (WRC) will host a talk on Faculty’s role in student well-being by Dr Afsane Riazi, Associate Professor in Psychology.
All faculty and staff are invited to this online talk on Wednesday 23 April April 12:30
While student well-being is an increasing priority in higher education, the role of faculty in shaping students’ academic and psychological experiences has received little empirical attention. This talk will draw on recent findings from a focus group study conducted on Richmond students on how faculty impact their well-being.
Focus groups were conducted with undergraduate and postgraduate students at Richmond from diverse cultural backgrounds, representing multiple nationalities and academic disciplines. Thematic analysis identified key factors in faculty-student interactions that students associated with academic confidence, emotional resilience, and a sense of belonging.
Although the findings are situated within a single institutional context, they raise important questions about how faculty-student interactions can contribute to student well-being. The session will outline emerging themes from the study and provide an opportunity for reflection of these findings and their implications.
