SUMMARY:Sticky Business: The Inersection of Transnational Gangs and Counterfeit Goods
DESCRIPTION:Sticky Business: The Intersection of Transnational Gangs and Counterfeit Goods\nDr. Andy Bain\, Westminster College\, Pennsylvania \nThursday 12th February\, 3.30-4.30pm\, Classroom 10 \n \nThe growth of interest shown by transnational crime groups and the production of fraudulent and counterfeit goods has been variously noted (see for instance\, Marine\, 2006; Phillips\, 2007; UNODC\, 2011; Zehra\, 2022). However\, the reach of transnational organized crime goes much deeper than designer clothing and counterfeit medicines. \nIn this short presentation Dr. Andy Bain discusses the ways in which transnational organized crime has sought to diversify its industry to look for new and inventive ways to increase revenue\, which has led to new partnerships and the restitution of illicit trade routes as they expand their reach to new global markets. \nWho is Dr. Andy Bain? \n \nDr. Andy Bain is a leading academic researcher with more than 20 years’ experience examining policing and gangs in both the United Kingdom and the United States of America. \nHe is among a handful of individuals that have twice been the recipient of the Frederic Milton Thrasher Award. In 2016 he received the award for his work examining the Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs\, and most recently (2024) Dr. Bain was recognised for his continued Superior Accomplishments in Gang Research. \nHe is a member of the Academy of Experts (London\, UK) and in 2025 he accepted the position of academic advisor to ONGIA (Organization for National Gang Information and Awareness)\, a national organisation providing education\, training\, and awareness on gang-related issues across Canada. \nHis current research interests include gangs and their membership; international and transnational gangs; policing social groups; the social psychology of risk-taking behaviour; and the psychology of crime and behaviour.

SUMMARY:Screening of "The Extremist and Me" Documentary
DESCRIPTION:The Extremist and Me\nA former neo-Nazi and a former Islamist extremist sit down for a single conversation to uncover the surprising and uncomfortable truths they have in common.\nThe documentary was produced as an impact part of the ESRC-funded research project “Everyday transnationalism of the right. An interdisciplinary study of Polish immigrants’ engagement with groups on the right-wing spectrum in the UK” conducted at London Metropolitan University. Producer: Dr Anna Jochymek (LMU)\, Executive Producers: Prof. Michal P. Garapich (LMU) and Prof. Rafal Soborski (Richmond). This is their second film produced as part of this research project; the first one\, That Boy\, was premiered in April 2025 at the European Parliament.\n\nPlease join the screening of this documentary and a discussion with Dr Anna Jochymek and Prof. Rafal Soborski\nWednesday\, 18 February 2026\, 17:00\, Classroom 3\n\nThe film brings Mirek and Sohail together not to debate politics\, but to confront the haunting parallels of their pasts. By reducing the frame to nothing but their dialogue\, the film creates an intense\, unshielded space where neither they\, nor the audience can retreat from hard truths. What emerges is not a clash of ideologies\, but a revelation of the shared human vulnerabilities such as identity\, belonging\, and purpose\, that can be twisted by trauma into violence and hate. What emerges is not a simple story of redemption\, but a complex portrait of two men forced to confront their shared trauma\, acknowledgment of the harm they caused and reconciliation with a monstrous past. It is a testament to the power of direct dialogue and an urgent antidote to the dehumanization that defines our time (Adam Janisch\, Director of The Extremist and Me)
