SUMMARY:The Challenges of Sustaining Peace: Kurdish Conflict in Turkey
DESCRIPTION:The Challenges of Sustaining Peace: Kurdish Conflict in Turkey\nClassroom F01\, 2-3:20pm \n\nDr Recep Onursal\, University of Kent \n\n\nThis lecture offers a critical examination of the Kurdish conflict in Turkey\, one of the world’s most enduring political conflicts. Situating the conflict within its broader historical and socio-political contexts\, the lecture interrogates the reasons behind its persistence and the barriers that have kept it unresolved for decades. Drawing on core theories of conflict resolution and transformation\, we will dissect the interplay of state policies\, hegemonic struggles\, and identity-based grievances that have shaped this protracted struggle. Participants will gain insights into how previous peace initiatives have failed—ranging from challenges in negotiation processes to the broader regional dynamics—and explore potential pathways toward its resolution and transformation. \nJoin the meeting now\nMeeting ID: 381 784 737 877\nPasscode: XH2St6Ud

SUMMARY:Decolonisation and Museums: Creating the ‘Endeavour’ Galleries
DESCRIPTION:Decolonisation and Museums: Creating the ‘Endeavour’ Galleries   \nWednesday 9th April\, 12:30pm\, Classroom 1    \nDr Claire Warrior\, Senior Curator\, Royal Museums Greenwich   \n The National Maritime Museum in Greenwich\, founded in 1936\, attracts over a million visitors a year and has the most important holdings in the world on the history of Britain and the sea. In 2018\, four new galleries opened at the Museum as part of a major refurbishment\, the ‘Endeavour’ project.    \nThe galleries marked a sea-change for the Museum\, emphasising increased access\, relevance and representation\, augmenting the available permanent gallery space by 40%\, and telling maritime histories anew. Their development was underpinned by an extensive programme of community engagement\, consultation and collaboration\, which is visible in the galleries themselves.    \n  In this talk\, Dr Claire Warrior will discuss some of the challenges and considerations involved in creating the new galleries. How can a museum so deeply embedded in histories of colonialism and imperialism represent their complexities? What are the opportunities and limitations of collections? And what kind of legacy does a project like this create?   \nThis guest talk is presented by The Centre for International Visual Arts and Cultures (IVAC).
